We hear it everywhere: "You need to space out your shampoos."
But is this really a good idea for all scalps?
And most importantly: is it beneficial… or sometimes counterproductive ?
At Démélé, they prefer to ask a different question:
What is right for your scalp, here and now?

Why did we start spacing out our shampoos?

For a long time, shampoos were too harsh .
They cleaned effectively, but at the cost of an imbalance in the scalp.

Result :
  • drought
  • itching
  • overproduction of sebum in reaction
Spacing out shampoos has therefore become a protective reflex : less washing to be less aggressive.

This logic makes sense in certain cases .

When spacing out shampoos can be beneficial

Spacing things out isn't always synonymous with better.
A scalp is:
  • exposed to pollution
  • natural sebum producer
  • covered with living microorganisms (the microbiome)
If you space out your shampoos too much:
  • sebum accumulates
  • the residue suffocates the scalp
  • the balance of the microbiome can become fragile
Possible outcome:
  • roots that quickly become oily again
  • itching
  • diffuse discomfort
  • film
A scalp does not need to be “put to the test” to self-regulate.

Un cuir chevelu est :
  • exposé à la pollution
  • producteur naturel de sébum
  • recouvert de micro-organismes vivants (le microbiome)

Si l’on espace trop les shampoings :
  • le sébum s’accumule
  • les résidus étouffent le cuir chevelu
  • l’équilibre du microbiome peut se fragiliser

Résultat possible :
  • racines qui regraissent vite
  • démangeaisons
  • inconfort diffus
  • pellicules

Respect the natural rhythm of the scalp

Every scalp has its own rhythm:
  • Some need to be washed more often
  • others less
There is no universal rule.
There is a balance to be observed .
The goal is not to space them out at all costs,
but to allow the scalp to function serenely .

The real question is not “how many times”, but “how”.

Rather than counting the days between shampoos, it's more accurate to ask:
  • Is my shampoo gentle on my scalp?
  • Do I clean without stripping?
  • Is my routine regular and consistent?
A gentle shampoo, formulated for the scalp , can be used regularly without causing imbalance .
Regularity soothes the scalp.
Brutality, on the other hand, disrupts it.

The right habits for washing without unbalancing

1. Choisir un shampoing respectueux du cuir chevelu

✔ Choose a shampoo that is kind to the scalp
A shampoo that is too harsh can disrupt the skin barrier and the microbiome, even if it is used infrequently.
Our recommendation
Opt for a shampoo formulated for the scalp , with gentle surfactants and skin-friendly active ingredients, to cleanse without irritating.

In summary

Spacing out shampoos is neither a rule nor a universal solution
A scalp regulates itself best with gentleness and consistency
The quality of cleaning matters more than the frequency
Listening to the signals from your scalp is essential

Respecting the scalp means respecting its natural rhythm.
And that's often where balance begins.
